Scenic America - Tree Conservation - caring for trees on a national scale.

Some of the Best Darn Volunteers in the State of Texas - North Texas Chapter, Texas Master Naturalists This state-wide program is sponsored by Texas Cooperative Extension and Texas Parks and Wildlife to develop a corps of well-informed volunteers to provide education, outreach and service dedicated to the beneficial management of natural resources and natural areas within their communities. NTMN members work to support UFAC and Texas Tree Trail initiatives.

Let's not forget about the Master Gardeners! The are also some of the best darn volunteers in the state of Texas! - Dallas County Master Gardener Association. Their mission is to be an educational, nonprofit, volunteer and service corporation which renders non-biased, sound horticultural information to the community. Master Gardeners work in partnership with the Texas Cooperative Extension and are the service arm of Extension Horticulture. Their objectives are accomplished through the volunteer efforts of Association Members.

Committee members volunteered to help community kids in the KDFW Fox4 Treasure Hunt at the Discovery Gardens, Fair park, Dallas, Oct. 2007. See video clips of the event.

There are many other unsung heroes in the Dallas citizenry who silently volunteer there time and talents and never make headlines. To quote Pepper Provenzano of Treelink, "They are the backbone of nonprofit organizations, and those nonprofits match your donated buck and make it worth what a buck used to be worth, with an endless wellspring of volunteer muscle and know-how and passion, driven by no other choice but the simple good of it."

"Some say you have to give to get in this world. I think there's more to it. Volunteers are like an unseen force in the evolutionary process of spiritual enrichment, but they also drive our roots into the earth and our limbs heavenward. That's more than a platitude, and not just a metaphor."

Volunteers

As volunteer opportunities arise, they will be listed on this page. Typically there will either be a hyperlink to an activity or phone numbers for additional information.

If you have a service or skill that can benefit our community such as planting trees, caring for trees or raising funds, please volunteer your time. We need professional and non-professional volunteers to fill all levels of team or individual service to the community. As an example: homeowner groups, community groups, Master Naturalists, Master Gardeners, Arborists, boy-scout troops, pathologists, horticulturalists, printers, computer specialists, church youth groups ...

The following is a list of teams to which one can volunteer:

  • Public Relations and Media Team

  • Wood Waste Recycling Team

  • Citizen Forester Team

  • Tree Planting and Transplanting Team

  • Tree/Forest Management Team

  • Forest Surveys, Inventory & Tracking Team

Regional Advocacy Groups Make A Difference

Girl Scouts  The Girl Scouts have a statement on advocacy. Locally. they are actively involved in a tree issue in McKinney.

As a follow up on the above story, it is interesting to note that the Girl Scouts reviewed our new display on the benefits of trees (picture attached) and copied portions of it for several recent public events. They also authored a petition to encourage the conservation of trees that was recently presented to the council after obtaining 877 signatures!!

Previous Opportunities

Signature Project, Skillman Tree Planting - Sat January 10th
It was originally scheduled this past November but postponed due to delays in delivering the requested trees. The weather was much too warm for the supplier to safely ball and burlap the trees. Doing so then would damage a live, active root system. The trees need to be partially dormant to cut them from the ground with minimal damage.

 Preston Ridge Trail Nov 15th AND 22nd, 2008 volunteer planting - November 15, 2008

Project Green Summit; Putting Green Into Action - Sponsored by WFAA 8, this is still an active pursuit. You can still go green! - Interested in Environmental and Alternate Energy Issues locally? Contact/Join the Dallas Area Alternative Energy Meetup Group. - September 2008

Mow Down Air Pollution - June 2008

Oak Cliff Earth Day 2008 - April 2008

Dallas Zoo - Party for the Planet - April 2008

Frito Lay Eco-Fair - April 2008

Citigroup Fair Park Tree Planting Exposition
November 2007
Last Saturday was a proud and historic moment in Dallas when over 1,000 two to three inch in diameter trees were planted. Mayor Leppert as well as six Council Members attended and/or planted trees in support of the event.
