Awards and Recognition
are given for a job well done and in a timely manner. Your Urban Forest
Advisory Committee goals are not necessarily to receive awards, however,
recognition is a positive sign that our mission message is being
received successfully.
Initiatives and planned actions of the Committee are recorded in
meeting minutes and posted after they are approved. Team leaders
assist volunteers in accomplishing many varied tasks as well as planned
projects.

The simple act of planting a tree can result in providing a multitude
of benefits over dozens or even hundreds of years to come.

Results Now and Centuries to Come
When
they see a newly planted seedling, most people see a little
tree. Those with vision see a home for wildlife, shade for their
grandchildren or clean air for future generations. It is
rewarding after doing your part in planting thousands of trees
but the greatest rewards are yet to come.
When the committee
affects the outcome of plans, programs or city codes by report,
study or recommendation to the betterment of the citizens of
Dallas for care, conservation, planting, pruning, removal or
disposition of trees citywide, we hope you will consider the processes we
have organized to this end a success. Our work has just begun,
however, and we have exciting plans for Dallas - now and for the
future of this great city.

Increased Public Awareness and Response
Our webmaster, Mr. Doug Pierson and our Public Relations Team
Leader, Mr. Mike Fitzgerald, recently provided a portion of a
statistical report showing
weekly activity
on our committee website over the date range of initial
inception through the week of November 2, 2008. It shows a
period high of 3,770 requests with 825 pages sent which speaks
volumes about our efforts to educate the public. Note: This peak
occured directly after the press release stating the
availability of the Committee's premiere publication; The ABCs
to Planting Trees in Dallas".
Mayor’s Environmental Excellence Award

As you may have heard, the Mayor and City Council are

big task and will take all of us to make that happen.
This new program was created to recognize local environmental

Dallas UFAC Chair
Gets
Presidential Volunteer Award
Steve Houser's the former chair of the
Dallas Urban Forest Advisory Committee, as well as the
founder and former president of the
Dallas Historic Tree Coalition
(The DHTC web is under construction but is a partner of
another great volunteer project initiated by Steve,
Texas Tree Trails), which is "a local citizens' group
advocating protection and preservation of irreplaceable
trees in urban landscapes." In other words, the dude's a
tree-hugger -- as evidenced by an Allison V. Smith
photo
of Houser actually hugging a tree in a 2002 High
Profile.

In 2003, President Bush created the President's
Council on Service and Civic Participation to find ways
to recognize the valuable contributions volunteers are
making in our Nation. The Council brings together
leaders from the worlds of business, entertainment,
sports, education, government, nonprofits, and the
media.
