Research
Advancement of research regarding photochemical modeling
of the urban forest will guide our future efforts, such as
the recent efforts in Sacramento.
The latest news on this project is summarized in the
following Dallas Morning News story, "Dallas
Committee Studying How Trees Grow Money"
The current Vision North Texas, Regional Choices for North
Texas reports that “Forests, both upland and bottomland
combined, cover about 28% of the area while emergent
wetlands and open water cover about 2 percent and 3 percent
respectively”.
Vision North Texas released the “Regional
Choices” report [56
Mb PDF file] which is an incredible compilation
of data including the Dallas Heat Island Effect maps (just
released), local landfill life expectancy map, impervious
cover map and it notes that the DFW carbon footprint is the
size of the entire state of New Mexico. Urban forestry is
making great strides on the regional level and the report
notes some of the committee's` objectives including the need
for tree inventory baseline data. The website includes the
report but downloading the entire report may take time due
to its size:
www.visionnorthtexas.org .
The Sustainable Skyline Conference March 2009 added a new
session that includes Dr. Fang Qiu, Associate Professor of
GIS and Remote Sensing Geospatial Information Sciences,
presenting our research pilot project and Mrs. Karen Walz,
Project Manager for Vision North Texas discussing how we can
work together to achieve sustainability plus how the urban
forest fits into our regional goals for 2050. (Topical
Presentations from the conference.)
